A Practical Guide to HLA
A guide to software development using the Run Time Infrastructure (RTI)

This 4-Day hands-on course provides students with an in-depth look at the High Level Architecture(HLA) and the Run Time Infrastructure(RTI). Learn the skills to design, implement, and test HLA Federates and Federations.

For a detailed outline, see the Practical Guide to HLA Development outline.

Overview

Visual Studio .NET and Red Hat 8 Support included

Quickstart Kit now supports Microsoft .NET 2003 and Red Hat v8 compilers including DMSO and MAK RTIs, source code modifications, and build environment files.

Learn what really goes into a working HLA Federation and how to avoid time consuming performance issues and integration problems when developing Federate applications. Gain practical experience and understanding of HLA development issues using a variety of software applications and interactive classroom discussions of critical design ideas and concerns.

There are a number of potential pitfalls and problem areas in HLA that can be easily prevented/managed if you know about them before getting started. This course specializes in telling you what you really need to know and spares you the marketing materials that can lead your program into expensive design errors.

Students will develop representative HLA applications using a variety of software packages including the DMSO 1.3NG RTI as well as the latest MAK IEEE 1516.1 compliant software. Each exercise will be accompanied by discussions intended to help the student understand what really goes into a distributed simulation architecture and formulate an understanding of complexity and level of effort required for different types of simulation projects.

Here are some important questions that will be answered during the class:

What is IEEE 1516 and how is it different from the HLA Version 1.3?
What the difference between various RTI packages?
How hard is it to switch between them?
How will latency impact my simulation and what can be done?
What other RTI implementations are available for my project?
How can the presence of DIS or multiple FOM affect a Federation?
Not all HLA Gateways are the same... What does your project need?
