Building Distributed Simulation Applications
Designed to provide practical experience utilizing the DIS protocol

DIS based simulations are a practical reality in our industry. Come learn how to develop and maintain DIS based applications from the experts!

This 4-day Hands-On training course explores the technology used in distributing simulations across a network using the DIS (IEEE 1278.1 & 1278.1a) protocol and related tools.

Overview

The objective of this course is to provide students with practical experience in the design and implementation of real-time distributed simulation applications utilizing the DIS protocol. This course focuses on real development considerations and situations that arise when utilizing the DIS protocol and associated network mechanisms. Students will also learn fundamental concepts of networking technology and visual simulation interfaces within the context of DIS application development. Through classroom discussions, students will explore key issues that must be considered in both design and implementation phases of a simulation project including the use of damage, environment, and munitions servers as well as simulation management and after-action review tools.

Course concepts are reinforced through programming labs and hands-on demonstrations. Students will receive source code examples and utilities to jump start their efforts.

In order to address the common practice of mixing DIS and HLA based applications, course materials and discussions will review the relationship between DIS and HLA. Migration and Bridging strategies are discussed and include both software architecture issues and the use of gateway/adapter systems to process network traffic. Detailed discussions that explain how DIS and HLA capabilities can be supported through gateways will be one of many focus points throughout the course presentations.

Contrary to what you might have heard, DIS is still going strong with new DIS equipped trainers delivering around the world. As a long standing, stable technology, DIS enjoys the advantage of being completely open, inexpensive to implement, fault tolerant, and more stable than many of the technologies selected to replace it.

Even within the HLA community, DIS simulations are a vital and integral part of most federations communicating with HLA applications through a variety of interface mechanisms. This course will equip you with the knowledge you need to develop new DIS applications, modernize existing DIS interfaces and understand key issues required to fully utilize DIS within HLA Federations.
