DiSTI® secures Phase II SBIR to generate source code to execute on avionics embedded hardware platforms
Rockwell Collins to provide technical expertise for FAA certification
ORLANDO, FL, August 15, 2003 - Distributed Simulation Technology, Inc. [DiSTI] a leading provider of software tools and components for the development of advanced visual and simulation applications, today announced that it has secured a Small Business Innovation Research contract from the US Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate, Fort Eustis, VA. This Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) award is to enable the use of object oriented software development methodologies in the development of avionics software, in particular, OpenGL Graphics for Rotorcraft Displays that meet FAA DO-178B certification.
The Phase II award is a continuation of the Phase I contract DiSTI received last year to advance this technology. It is valued at up to $800,000 over the course of two years and illustrates DiSTI’s momentum in providing a full development cycle graphics tool appropriate for use to prototype multi-function displays (MFD) for pilot-vehicle interfaces through deployment in the in-cockpit display.
DiSTI has entered into a cooperative business arrangement with Rockwell Collins for the purpose of modifying GL Studio to generate certified source code to execute on an embedded hardware platform.
DiSTI and Rockwell Collins will target MFDs currently used in various Army aviation platforms including the US Army SOF, UH-60 and CH-47. As part of this arrangement Rockwell Collins will work with DiSTI to refine GL Studio’s code generator to meet the resource constraints associated with executing in an embedded real-time application, and to support DO-178B certifiable OpenGL software.
“Currently, customers use GL Studio to prototype Black Hawk, Chinook and Apache MFDs. This SBIR award will allow us to deliver a tool to our customers that will generate code for prototyping, simulation, courseware or embedded systems from the same engineering design file,” said Joe Swinski, President of DiSTI®. “The object-oriented design of the tool will increase coding efficiency, allowing for more re-use which will save the Army money and time on rotorcraft, ground vehicle and artillery programs,” Swinski added.
